The roaring ‘20s
In the 1900s, commerce on the river gradually declined, and the beautiful Michigan Avenue Bridge was opened in 1920. So, beginning in the Roaring ‘20s, Rush Street transformed into a vibrant street of entertainment and nightlife. The street became home to many cabarets, bars, clubs and restaurants, where famous places like Mister Kelly’s featured America’s best comedians, musicians and singers. Many young performers nurtured their dreams and got their start on Rush Street too.
